Accommodation in Marrakech

Accommodation in Marrakech offers something for every kind of traveler, but it's not just about a place to crash. Staying in a riad within the medina means waking up to the sounds of the call to prayer and strolling through narrow alleys lined with spice markets and street vendors. If you want something quieter and more modern, the Hivernage district has some great hotels and apartments where you can escape the chaos.

I’ve always liked mixing a night or two in a traditional riad with a more relaxed stay outside the medina – let yourself enjoy both worlds. Just a heads up, Marrakech gets pretty hot in summer, so accommodations with a pool can be a lifesaver. And if you’re into design, seek out places with that classic Moroccan tilework and central courtyard , it’s a vibe that really stays with you. Whatever you choose, where you stay will shape your whole Marrakech experience, so pick a spot you feel excited about coming back to after a day wandering Jemaa el-Fnaa or the Majorelle Garden.

Where I like to stay

If you’ve never been to Marrakech, I suggest spending a couple nights in the Medina , especially in a traditional riad around the old city’s heart. Places near Rue Bab Doukkala offer that authentic pace without feeling too touristy. Then, switch to a hotel or apartment in Hivernage or Gueliz to catch your breath, enjoy modern amenities, and maybe a good cocktail at night.

For a local touch, check out riads like Riad Be Marrakech or Dar Les Sirènes. And here’s a tip: ask if there’s a rooftop terrace. Sunrise over the minarets? Hard to beat that view.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about finding a place to stay in Marrakech? Here are some answers.

If you want to soak in Marrakech’s real old-city atmosphere, staying in the Medina’s riads is unbeatable. But it can get noisy and crowded. Outside, in neighborhoods like Gueliz or Hivernage, you’ll find calmer streets and more modern comforts. I split time between both when I have guests.

Many hotels and riads have pools, but not all. During summer months, when the heat hits 40°C, a pool’s almost essential for cooling off. Smaller riads might only have a plunge pool or none at all, so check before booking if that’s important to you.

Absolutely. The Medina has plenty of budget guesthouses and mid-range riads close to Jemaa el-Fnaa. Just be ready for small rooms and shared bathrooms in some places. Gueliz also has some affordable apartments but without the historic charm of the old city.

If you’re traveling during high season (spring and fall), it’s good to book at least a couple of months ahead. Riads especially fill up fast during festivals or holidays. Booking last-minute can work in low season, but you’ll have fewer options.

Yes , many locals rent out furnished apartments and even entire riads to visitors staying a month or more. Areas like Gueliz and the Palmeraie tend to have better long-term options with Wi-Fi and kitchens. I recommend checking expat or local rental groups for the best deals.
