Description
Essaouira sits on the Atlantic coast, 2.5 hours west of Marrakech. It is a UNESCO World Heritage medina, a working fishing port, and one of the windiest cities on the African continent, all within walking distance of each other. This Essaouira day trip from Marrakech gets you there and back. What you do with the time in between is entirely up to you. Departure from Marrakech at 9:00am. The drive follows the argan forest road west toward the Atlantic coast, with a short comfort break at Sidi Mokhtar halfway. Arrival in Essaouira at noon, when the port is at its most active and the medina is fully open. Essaouira has four distinct areas, each worth spending time in. The fishing port is where the city starts its day. Blue wooden boats, fishermen sorting the morning catch, seagulls, and the charcoal grill stands where you can buy fresh Atlantic sardines cooked in front of you. It is one of the most photographed spots in Morocco and one of the cheapest places to eat well. The medina of Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, compact, walkable, and architecturally unlike anything in Marrakech. The streets are wide enough for Atlantic wind to move through them. The walls are whitewashed and blue. The thuya woodworkers occupy the same artisan quarter they have used for centuries. The souks here are calm prices are marked, negotiation is minimal. The Scala sea ramparts run along the ocean-facing wall of the medina. Portuguese cannons from the 18th century are still mounted in position. The view from the top looks straight out to the Atlantic. Entry costs 10 MAD and takes about 20 minutes to walk. Place Moulay Hassan is the main square open, wind-swept, and lined with café terraces facing the port gate. Gnawa musicians play here every afternoon. The light turns golden in the hour before departure. The return drive leaves Essaouira at 4:30pm, with a comfort break at Sidi Mokhtar. Back in Marrakech by 7:00pm. Return transport from Marrakech to Essaouira is included. Everything else like food, entry fees, purchases — is at your own pace and your own choice.
